On Feb. 25, junior guard Cassius Winston was named the Big Ten men’s basketball Player of the Week. This is Winston’s fifth honor this season and of his career, with his last nomination being announced on Jan. 28.
Winston is the first Spartan to earn five Big Ten Player of the Week honors in a season, and he joins Ohio State’s Evan Turner (seven in 2009-10), Purdue’s Caleb Swanigan (six in 2016-17) and Purdue’s Glenn Robinson (five in 1993-94) as the only individuals to earn five or more Player of the Week honors in a single season.
He leads the Big Ten in assists with 7.5 per game and ranks third in points per game (19.2 ppg). Winston averaged 27.5 points, 8.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 50.0 percent from the floor in a pair of wins for the Spartans, who stand alone in first place in the Big Ten.
On Feb. 20 against Rutgers, Winston recorded a game-high 28 points along with eight assists, five rebounds and three 3-pointers in a 71-60 win. In No. 6 Michigan State’s 77-70 victory at No. 9 Michigan, he posted a game-high 27 points and handed out eight assists while converting 7-of-13 from the floor and 13-of-14 from the foul line. He proved himself to be a key player on the team during the game.
Winston has scored at least 20 points in 15 games this season, including 12 of the last 17 games. With junior guard Joshua Langford and junior forward Nick Ward both currently out with injuries, he has had to prove his worth and make up for the loss of two of Michigan State’s best players.
The Spartans will travel to Bloomington, Indiana to take on the Hoosiers March 2. Tip off will be at 12 p.m.
