'Wonderland of Lights' illuminates Potter Park Zoo for the holidays

Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo will begin lighting up the holiday season with its 24th annual Wonderland of Lights.

Wonderland of Lights will illuminate the zoo from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. Starting Nov. 22 and lasting until Dec. 30, visitors can enjoy the holiday lights displays and decorated animal exhibits.

In addition to festive light displays, cookies and holiday-themed crafts will be available for kids, and Santa Claus will make an appearance on the following days for photo opportunities:

  • Nov. 30 
  • Dec. 1 
  • Dec. 7 
  • Dec. 8
  •  Dec. 14 
  • Dec. 15 
  • Dec. 21 
  • Dec. 22

The Potter Park Zoo’s annual Toys for Tots drive will accompany the Wonderland of Lights and individuals who donate a new, unwrapped toy on Dec. 1 can receive free admission. 

Admission for Wonderland of Lights is $7 for adults and $5 for kids ages three to 12. Kids under the age of three get in for free.

For those going home for the holidays, other Michigan zoos also have light displays set up for the season.

Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek opens their ZooLights Nov. 30 and they run through Dec. 23.  ZooLights is open to the public Friday through Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors can see the animals in their winter habitats and go for a ride on the zoo's carousel. The Detroit Zoo’s Wild Lights had its opening weekend Nov. 17 and will continue to be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Dec. 31. Wild Lights features five million LED lights in the trees, on the buildings and even forming sculptures of animals throughout the zoo. Hours and prices vary depending on the weekend.
