Michigan State men's soccer (13-4-4) will play for a spot in the Final Four as they are set to take on James Madison University (15-4-3) in the College Cup quarterfinals.
The Spartans are looking to secure a spot in the national semifinal, as the winner of their game will face the winner of no. 2 seed Indiana and No. 7 seed Notre Dame.
After defeating University of Illinois-Chicago in the first round with a 2-0 shutout, MSU’s most notable victory came in the second round, as senior defender John Freitag’s overtime goal off a set piece lifted the Spartans over No. 4 seed Louisville 2-1.
The Spartans clinched an Elite Eight berth after defeating No. 13 seed Georgetown in Washington, D.C. this past Sunday.
Sophomore midfielder Michael Miller recorded his first goal of the season, which ended up being the game-winning goal against the Hoyas, with under a minute left in the first half, as the Spartans held on to win 1-0.
"Hats off to Georgetown, both the soccer program and the athletic department,” coach Damon Rensing said postgame. “There were some tough conditions, and they adjusted and made the professional decision to move to the turf here. They handled everything with class and are a very good program. This was just a great college soccer game. It had intensity; it had chances. All in all it was a great game."
The Spartans will look to advance to the Final Four when they host James Madison in the quarterfinals 5 p.m. on Saturday at DeMartin Soccer Stadium.
