After colliding with a vehicle, a motorcyclist heading eastbound on Saginaw Highway veered into another vehicle heading westbound Oct. 9 just after 6 p.m., according to a press release from the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD).

The motorcyclist, 68-year-old East Lansing resident Edward Michael Belles, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The first vehicle was exiting a private driveway near the intersection of Saginaw Highway and Abbot Road at the time of the crash, according to ELPD Deputy Chief Steve Gonzalez.

The area of Saginaw near Abbot Road was closed for about four hours, Gonzalez said. ELPD is investigating the initial cause of the crash.

"It's too early to say whether or not alcohol played a factor in the crash or whether or not excessive speed played a factor in the crash," Gonzalez said.

ELPD said in the press release that the department's "thoughts are with Belles’ family and friends during this difficult time."
