MSU is creating a new dean of students and assistant provost for academic standards and student conduct position, according to a university press release. The position will oversee student behavior and conduct, revise policies and processes and be a resource for students, faculty, and staff.
The decision to establish the position is pending approval by the MSU Board of Trustees at the board meeting on Friday Oct. 26.
The position will be first held on an interim basis by Dr. Philip Strong, associate dean for students and instructor in the Lyman Briggs College.
“I am truly honored to be asked to take on this new interim role. This is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with the campus community to create a new office focused on advancing positive and respectful student behavior reflecting Spartan’s core values," Strong said in the release.
Strong has worked in the Lyman Briggs College for 19 years, has worked with several "student-centered roles" at Washington State University and the University of Florida and has a doctorate in higher, adult and lifelong education from MSU.
The role is expected to be filled and defined on a permanent basis by next spring.
"The new position will oversee issues related to student conduct and discipline by focusing on the programs and processes that promote safety, academic integrity, civility and respect, conflict resolution, inclusivity and social justice," the release said.
The Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, has recently called for the creation of this new position, and their leading representative was pleased with the university's response.
"It is great to see one of the various ASMSU legislations turn into reality," ASMSU President Katherine "Cookie" Rifiotis said in the press release. "We hope to be consulted throughout the implementation process to guarantee the Office of the Dean of Students fulfills all that is necessary for our community.”
