The Student Affairs and Services division of MSU hosted its third annual Fall-A-Palooza on Sept. 21 in the Student Services Building on campus. The event, free with donuts, cider and Dairy Store ice cream, was held to connect students to non-academic resources at MSU. Here are the top five lesser-known resources MSU has to offer.

Student Parent Resource Center

This group works with MSU students who are also parents. It provides child-care assistance, scholarships and other resources. It also serves the Student Parents on a Mission (SPOM) organization. SPOM offers family activities and peer-to-peer support for student parents.

Student Parent Resource Center Coordinator Kimberly Steed-Page talked about why her group was at Fall-A-Palooza.

“Student parents are just one other diverse piece of the student body at MSU. About five percent of the MSU student population have at least one child between the ages of 0 to 17,” Steed-Page said. "Our littlest Spartans are a part of MSU just the way their parents are, so it’s important the rest of MSU knows about them."

Health Promotions and Primary Prevention

Health Promotions works with Olin Health Center to provide several different services to student such as the Condom Connection, Nutrition Counseling and the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC). The CRC helps provide students who've struggled with substance abuse the resources they need to stay sober.

Psychology and criminal justice sophomore and CRC member Teri Lowmaster talked about why Health Promotions is an important resource to MSU students.

"It’s good to get more information about being healthy and good to get more information about drugs and alcohol and recovery,” Lowmaster said.

MSU Sexual Assault Program

The Sexual Assault Program (SAP) provides a number of resources for survivors of sexual assault including a 24-hour hotline, therapists and their new canine advocate Justice. They also provide awareness and resources for students to become better educated about sexual assault. The program also oversees the Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Team (SACI).

MSU Recreational Sports and Fitness Services

Recreational Sports and Fitness Services includes intramural sports and fitness activities, such as group exercise classes, which are put on throughout various neighborhoods on campus.

Social media coordinator Jordan Kilgren shared why his group was talking to students at Fall-A-Palooza.

“To promote all the great things you can do to improve your health and well-being,” Kilgren said.

Career Services

Career Services says they try to to assist students from their freshman year all the way to senior year, when students are preparing for career fairs. The center also helps students with prepping their resumes and cover letters and finding on-campus employment.

Media and information junior Claire Destrampe talked about why she enjoyed working in the career services center during the event.

“I really enjoy helping people. Everybody gets to come have fun here and ask questions if they want," Destrampe said. "I just like getting to see all the different people and everybody has so much fun coming in here."
