The Michigan State women's golf team took second in their home tournament, the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West in East Lansing, finishing with a 5-under-par score.
Individually, junior Allyson Geer-Park, shared the championship with Virginia junior Anna Redding, whose Cavaliers captured the team title with a 7-under-par performance. The two players tied a tournament record, shooting a 9-under-par 207 for the weekend.
"She's been a Spartan for a long time and told me today she remembered walking the course with Mary (Fossum, the founder of MSU's women's golf program), so to win this tournament is pretty special," head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said.
Geer-Park finished the tournament at 3-under-par 69, and went 4-under-par on the last seven holes, after playing a 68-70 opening to the weekend. This individual victory is the first of the acclaimed Geer-Park's collegiate career.
"It feels great. It was definitely on my mind all summer," Geer-Park said. "I played well in the final rounds of some tournaments in the past, but some players just had better rounds than me."
The Spartans travel to Franklin, Tennessee next weekend for the Mason Rudolph Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt University.
