The Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, had their first meeting of the 2018-19 academic year on Thursday.
The meeting reviewed the different tasks ASMSU completed over the summer months and went over some goals the organization has for the school year.
Here are some takeaways from the meeting.
MSU Counseling & Psychiatric Services
The meeting started with a presentation from the MSU Counseling & Psychiatric Services, or CAPS. This is a budding partnership in order to spread more awareness of mental health while also promoting a mobile app.
Mark Patishnock, CAPS director, mentioned various levels of screening for students, especially for those who do not wish to be clients.
Creating a dean of students
A member of the Office of the President of ASMSU took part in learning about university governance and creating a dean of students.
If this would take effect, it would be the highest governing body below the state-elected board of trustees.
Another member of ASMSU, who is involved with making the campus more sustainable, dropped the price of double-sided printing by a cent. This makes the cost nine cents a page instead of ten cents.
Housing survey among students done over the summer
A housing survey was also completed during the summer.
The survey asked students various questions about landlords and how quickly maintenance reports were completed. This was done to give students an idea as leasing season is approaching.
Voter registration on campus
Voter registration is one of the initiatives ASMSU has on their agenda for this school year.
Over the summer, ASMSU registered 2,500 students to vote. Now, ASMSU is trying to be involved with mailing voting information out to students, as well as dorm-knocking.
New ASMSU directors voted in
Lastly, the new directors for ASMSU were officially voted in unanimously by all committees that were present.
