The Poetry Room invites readers, writers and lovers of poetry to the Robin Theater for their final open mic event of the spring season. The open mic event will take place on Tuesday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m.
This month’s theme is “The Classics” and is open to the public at no charge, although donations are appreciated. Women of the World Poetry Slam finalist and Detroit native Natasha T. Miller will be performing as the feature artist.
Seats and open mic sign-up are on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Co-founder and co-host Grace Carras encourages poets of all age and skill level to come out and show some love and support for the local talent.
Carras, a current MSU student, partnered MSU alum Masaki Takahashi and the Robin Theater in August 2017. Their idea was to host a monthly series of open mic events for poets, writers and musicians to perform. Almost a year later, the Poetry Room will end its first season, but it has additional events scheduled in June and July.
“The Poetry Room is basically an open mic, poetry, comedy, music, extravaganza good time where we do our very best to bring a nice cocktail blend of newcomers and experienced poets to the stage and try to build a supportive and dynamic environment," Carras said.
After next Tuesday, the Poetry Room won't be hosting regular events at the Robin Theater until fall. But interested individuals can still get their poetry fix this summer at a Poetry Room Open Mic < Rewind on Friday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. and at the Summer Slam: World Slam Poetry Tournament on Friday, July 13 at 6:30 pm.
Both events are being held at Henry’s Place in Okemos.
According to Carras, the Poetry Room strives to bring people together and create a strong community based in a love for poetry, both written and spoken.
“There’s really no way to get closer to a community or to a group of people than sharing your innermost thoughts via poetry," Carras said. "It’s like ‘Hey, welcome to my brain, take a look around, make yourself at home.'”
