Since January 2014, women's basketball has yet to win a game in Columbus. That streak continues as the Spartans take another loss to the No. 12 Buckeyes, 78-62. This is now the fourth loss in the past six games, as the Spartans drop to 14-8 on the season and 4-5 in the Big Ten.
It was a tight game until the fourth quarter when Ohio State’s offense heated up quickly, outscoring the Spartans 28-14. The Buckeye’s had three players finish with 20 points or more.
With a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter by Ohio State, head coach Suzy Merchant quickly called a timeout with 5:40 to go. However, the Spartans gave up the ball again for the their 13th turnover on the afternoon, which led to an easy bucket for the Buckeye’s and never looked back from there.
Some positives for the Spartans this afternoon were getting back a healthy lineup with sophomore guard Taryn McCutcheon returning after missing her first game in her career against Michigan. McCutcheon finished with nine points, three rebounds and six assists, but had five turnovers.
Senior forward Lexi Gussert returned to action as well after missing the past five games. Gussert scored no points, but collected two rebounds.
Junior center Jenna Allen led the team in scoring with 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Freshman forward Sidney Cooks started off hot, scoring the team’s first eight points. Cooks finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
The Spartans will return back home from their two-game road trip to face the University of Iowa Thursday at 6 p.m.
