Ice hockey split weekend series with No. 18 Wisconsin

Freshman forward Mitchell Lewandowski continues on his hot streak for the Spartans as he and his teammates come out of their weekend series with No. 18 Wisconsin, adding three more goals to keep his lead in goals among his teammates and freshmen nationally.

The Spartans began their first game against the Badgers with a shutout from sophomore goaltender John Lethemon, his fourth of the season with a total of 30 saves. The Spartans' two goals on Friday night came from Lewandowski on the power play and junior forward Cody Milan. 

Sophomore forward Taro Hirose increased his point total for the season, gaining one out of his three assists to make his assist total 20 on the season. 

On Saturday night, the Badgers got their revenge and beat the Spartans, 5-2. Lewandowski scored the lone two goals of the night, with one of them being on the power play. Lethemon had 21 saves but allowed four goals, and the Badgers scored their fifth goal on an empty net.

The Badgers gave the Spartans’ No. 15 power play unit 10 times to score on the one-man advantage this weekend.

The 9-13-1 Spartans will return home at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Munn Ice Arena to take on the No. 13 Minnesota Golden Gophers before they at 8 p.m. on Jan. 20 at Madison Square Garden.
