Women’s basketball defeated Oakland 95-63 in another home blowout last night as the Spartans improve to 2-0 on the season.

In the first quarter MSU kept it close, but pulled away as the Spartans outscored the Golden Grizzlies 29-12 in the second period. After the first half, MSU lead 49-29 and lead by as many as 35 points.

Guard Shay Colley flirted with a triple double finishing with a total of 14 points on 5 of 13 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds and nine assists.

“She always reminds me of those hall of fame running backs like Walter Payton,” head coach Suzy Merchant said. “Shay is a quick one that can change directions at any time and, to me, she is just extremely unselfish, a joy to watch and a special talent.”

Shay’s transfer from South Carolina to MSU has been easy as the coaching staff and her teammates have helped her become comfortable on both the offense and defensive end.

“I’m not playing for myself, I’m playing for my team and the whole Spartan community,” Colley said. “At the end of the day I’m just playing for something greater than myself.”

Senior forward Taya Reimer lead the way with 20 points on 9 of 12 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four blocks.

Rebounds were the Spartans key success tonight and a defining point for this team as it dominated on the boards once again, outrebounding Oakland 59-34.

“We still aren’t happy with it even though we had a large rebounding margin,” Reimer said. “I think there is still a lot of stuff that we are looking back on that we still need to do even better, but it is something that we have been focusing on along with defense.”

The Spartans will look to improve to 3-0 when the team faces the College of Charleston at the Breslin Center on Sunday at noon.
