The great state race of Alex Powell returns to MSU this year, but this time there are two additional people to add to the 64 mile run.

On the Friday before the big MSU vs. U-M football game, an elite team of Army ROTC Cadets from both colleges will join at MSU’s Demonstration Hall near the “Sparty” statue for a run in honor of Powell.

Powell was a dedicated, athletic, and courageous MSU student who’s dream was to make the most of every day he had as a student on campus after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.

Powell never lost his zest for life and will always leave his Spartan legacy on the campus of MSU with “Alex’s Great State Race.”

On the morning of the race, the ROTC cadets will be presented with the game ball and together they will run 64 miles of back roads to U-M’s famous Diag at 3 a.m. There, they will be joined by Lt. Gov Brian Calley and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein.

Donations for this symbolic partnership between the two elite educational institutions will help support the work of the RCPD at MSU and its sister organization at The Office of Support for Students with Disabilities at The University of Michigan.

Powell’s passion for MSU, joy in athletics, and zest for life will also be celebrated along the way.
