After a victory at DeMartin Stadium on Monday afternoon, the Spartans finish with a score of 1-0 beating Cleveland State University. This game with marks the fourth straight shutout the team has recorded this season.
The last time the Spartans started the season with four-straight shutouts was back in 1968. For senior goalie Jimmy Hague, this was his eleventh shutout in his Spartan career.
“It feels great,” Hague said. “It's a whole factor for the whole team, it’s not just me it's everybody from forwards, to the midfielders, to the defense. It was awesome.”
Towards the end of it, Cleveland State began to attack harder and had multiple chances to score, but still could not get past Hague who had 4 saves on the day.
“I really did not have much action until the very end,” Hague said. “I just gotta stay focused and communicate throughout the whole game. I can’t just doze off, I always gotta be focused. That's what helped me out today.”
After providing heavy pressure, junior defender Connor Corrigan connected with senior defender Jimmy Fiscus on a corner kick 19 minutes into the game. It was Fiscus' first goal of the season and the only goal of the game.
“Anytime in soccer it’s 1-0, even if you’re dominating games, it seems like the ball is going to end up in front of your goal at the end,” head coach Damon Rensing said.
In the past three games, the team has scored only one or two goals per game. For Rensing, he feel his team can produce more than they actually did.
“I was more on our offensive stuff,” Rensing said. “I thought we needed to give our defenders a little more of a breather. ... We have to find out how to win a game by more than one goal.”
On Friday, the team will head back on the road to travel to New Jersey to face off against Rutgers in their first Big Ten action this season for both teams.
“Right now we’re 0-0 in the Big Ten,” Rensing said. “So, these four wins are great, but they don’t mean a whole lot going into Rutgers and I’m sure Rutgers is going to say the same thing.”
