Three-time All American in cross country and Olympic Finalist Warren Druetzler died at the age of 88 last Thursday.
In 1950, Druetzler was the first athlete in MSU history to compete in the Big Ten Championship and claimed fourth overall at the Cross Country Championship. In track and field, he ran on the 4x880 relay team breaking a world record in Los Angeles at the Coliseum Relays.
During his sophomore year, he finished fifth overall in the NCAA meet and placed second during his senior year. He helped men’s cross country team to NCAA titles in 1948 and 1949. Druetzler was crowned the AAU steeplechase champion along with the NCAA mile champion in 1951.
Towards the end of his career, he qualified for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics in the 1500 meter race and advance to the final race where he placed 15th overall.
