The MSU women’s soccer team picked up its second win of the season on a hot Sunday afternoon at Samford Soccer Complex, beating the Bulldogs of Samford University, 3-2.

The physical contest featured a combined 24 fouls and five yellow cards recorded between the two teams.

Senior midfielder Morgan Mckerchie rebounded from a quick yellow card and scored the first goal of the match off an assist from junior forward Lexy Warner and senior forward Jamie Cheslik.

The goal was the first of the season for Mckerchie, as well as the first shot generated in the game by the Spartans.

Senior forward Kristelle Yewah got into the action as well after a Bulldog goal tied the game midway through the first half. She scored off a header from a free kick from freshman Danielle Stephan in the 29th minute to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

The Spartans did not see many scoring opportunities in the second half against a very aggressive Bulldogs team.

Samford took 20 shots total in the game with nine of them being on target; seven of which were saved by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Reilley Ott, who played the full 90 minutes.

Aside from a Bulldog goal in the 62nd minute, MSU was able to hold off a resilient Samford team, with that being the Bulldogs only goal of the entire second half.

While scoring opportunities were limited, the Spartans capitalized off the few chances they generated as Cheslik crept in a goal during a quick restart after a free kick with five minutes left in the game.

The late score gave the Spartans the 3-2 advantage and ultimately the win.

MSU travels to Bowling Green and plays the Falcons on Sept. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
