Update: MSU's women's head basketball coach Suzy Merchant was released from the hospital Monday, according to a statement from MSU Athletics released at about 5 p.m.
Merchant spent the night at the hospital for precautionary testing and is now resting at home. A time frame for her return has not yet been set, but the Spartans are back in action Wednesday at Purdue at 6 p.m.
During the MSU Women's Basketball game against the University of Illinois, Head Coach Suzy Merchant fainted on the sideline early in the 4th quarter Sunday night.
With eight minutes left in the final quarter, the Spartans kept their lead through the commotion beating Illinois 71-47.
Following the game assistant head coach, Amaka Agugua said Merchant is going to be ok after her incident.
"First of all that was very scary," Agugua said. "She went down pretty hard. She fainted and was a little discombobulated when she got up. She was trying to figure out what happened. She’s doing well. She knows what happened at the end of the game. She was communicating very well. She’s going to be ok."
According to a statement put out by the women's basketball program, Merchant immediately received medical attention after her fall and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation. The head coach was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for a deeper evaluation including more tests and an overnight stay.
