Former MSU field hockey player Heather Howie was named to the Scottish Women's National Team for the World League 2, which is the next step of the Scottish team's hunt for the Hockey World Cup, according to an MSU press release.

“I am extremely excited to be heading out to Valencia with the team to compete at the World League,” Howie said in the release. “We have been working really hard as a team to prepare the best we can in order to achieve our goal of winning the tournament. This is my first international tournament and I cannot wait to get out there and compete with the team. Playing for my country is a massive honor and something I take huge pride in doing.”

In her first season at MSU in 2011, the Glasgow, Scotland native saw action in all 20 games for MSU, 1 of which she started. In her debut season, Howie tallied a team-high four assists.

On Aug. 27, 2011, Howie — in her first game as a Spartan — recorded her first point against California off of an assist.

In 2013, she was a vital part of the Spartans' midfield, starting in all 24 games for MSU. Howie registered eight assists on the season, which was the third-most on the team and 10th in the Big Ten while leading the team to the Elite Eight.

She redshirted in 2014 before playing her final season with MSU in 2015.

In her final season, Howie recorded five goals and tied a team-high five assists for 15 points. She logged her last collegiate career goal against Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament on Nov. 5, 2015.

Last fall, Howie was one of seven Scottish team members who were given the opportunity to tryout for the Great Britain hockey team, who were the reigning Olympic Champions.

“I am thrilled for Heather that she has been selected to represent Scotland at World League 2 in Valencia,” MSU head coach Helen Knull said in the release. “During her time at Michigan State she stayed dedicated and committed to Scottish hockey, playing in age level tournaments in the summer months and over winter break. To see all that hard work pay off is so rewarding for Heather and I know she has a bright future on the international stage. We wish we could all hop on the plane to watch her play in World League, but she knows her spartan family will be following and supporting from the other side of the Atlantic.”

World League 2 will be held in Valencia, Spain from Feb. 4 until Feb. 12. The Scottish Team have a slate of games that include match-ups against Ghana, Poland and Ukraine amongst others. The top two teams will qualify for a spot in the Hockey World League 3.
