The MSU women’s basketball team went on the road Tuesday to play Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. With a 71-54 win over Quinnipiac, the Spartans bring their season record to 8-2 overall. It was an all-around effort from the Spartans as senior captain and guard Tori Jankoska led the team with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

In the first quarter, MSU led 7-6, but the Spartans went on an 11-0 run to end the first leading by 12 points, 18-6. After the run, the momentum was on their side for the remainder of the game. MSU held Quinnipiac to 18.5 percent from the field during the first half. During the second half, the Bobcats tried to respond, but the lead from the first half was so substantial they couldn’t come back from it.

There were three Spartans scoring in the double-digits against the Bobcats. Scoring and offensive dominance somewhat struggled for some of MSU’s players and others had to step up to make sure they came out on top with the win.

Freshman forward Nia Hollie scored a career-high 12 points and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Hollie also contributed 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and a career-high 3 steals.

Junior guard Lexi Gussert scored 12 points, reaching a new season-high while also getting a career high with 3 steals. Gussert shot 4-of-7 from the floor during the game, including a shot from downtown.

Jankoska was 8-of-9 from the free throw line, and freshman guard Taryn McCutcheon converted 5-of-6 from the line. MSU shot 76.7 percent from the free throw line.

Jankoska finished the game 2-for-9 from 3-point range became the second-best 3-point shooters in school history. As a school, the Spartans converted 4-of-21 shots from beyond the arc.

Quinnipiac’s Adily Martucci was the leading scorer of the night with 20 points, including a game-high three triples.

MSU will continue  with another game on the road against Rhode Island on Thursday at 7 p.m.
