The band Marvels held a concert on top of the Trowbridge parking garage, which is located on Trowbridge Road behind the Communication Arts and Sciences Building.
Band members weren't exactly calm when the concert first started.
"We were pretty nervous at first," bass player Jacob Hite said. "It's our first time playing outside, so it's kind of difficult for us to get used to that."
This is because inside venues make it easier to transmit music, Hite said.
“Inside you have bounce backs from whatever surfaces are around you, walls, chairs and that kind of stuff but outside the sound just shoots everywhere, it's especially hard when you don't have a ceiling,” lead singer and guitarist Matt Everett said. “That’s why a lot of outdoor concerts have ceilings, because it projects better.”
Psychology senior Everett and urban and regional planning senior Hite are both students at MSU. The show was brought to their attention when they were approached by MSU assistant professor Henry Brimmer. Brimmer's son is in a local band called Immanuel Can’t and is good friends with the members of Marvels.
“Henry (Brimmer) has been a pretty big fan of Marvels since he saw us about a year ago and he contacted us about doing this show, which he does every year, a few weeks ago,” Everett said. “We were pretty excited.”
Marvels is a Psychedelic/Shoegaze rock band based in Lansing that formed in 2013, according to their website. The band has four EP’s called "Lost Dog EP," "MELTING," "Drudge Attire EP" and most recently released on Sept. 1, the "Ruby Ridge EP."
The band members are all from the Grand Blanc, Mich. and Flint, Mich. area and that’s how they got things started.
“(Matt and Virginia) are brother and sister, I knew Ernest (Klingler) and Ernest knew Matt,” Hite said.
At first, Klingler was still in East Lansing while the Everett siblings and Hite were still back home.
“After we started playing together and doing some shows in Flint, we decided it was best for us to relocate,” Klingler said, “So we moved out to Lansing two years ago and we’ve been there ever since.”
Members of Marvels said they like this music and ended up selecting it as their genre of choice.
“We don’t go into this and think about what we want to write,” Hite said. “We just start playing and what we like kind of just surfaces.”
Marvels doesn’t have a concert scheduled right now, but they said they might have a house show on Halloween. With this, Marvels said they do prefer to play in house shows than a more formal scene.
“It’s a fun atmosphere,” Everett said. “It’s usually a little looser than some bar shows. People are just there to chill out and have fun."
