Letter: 5 artists to get you through college

June 7, 2016

Artists to get you through college:

5. Childish Gambino

Gambino's is anything but ordinary. His combination of laxness and intensity with the vibes his synths allow make for an interesting experience. There's enough indie in the mix to please almost anyone. Typically his album dictates his style with his latest pleasing more of an indie crowd. There are subtle emotions dropped throughout songs but nothing so over the top, but the tone is there.

He's an excellent performer, and is somebody I believe most hip hop or indie lovers will enjoy. He has some relatable pieces and some outwardly lyrics that will get a reaction out of you one way or another. For me he's been an artist to jam to while vegging with your friends and grabbing a bite. I'd recommend any of his three albums, however "Camp" is what started it for him

4. Twenty One Pilots

If you're into the indie scene as a whole, you've probably known about them and are more verse in their discography than I am. Relatively knew to them as a whole, they've been a group I'll listen to on the radio, or won't skip while sifting through my playlists. Production quality is nice and clarity is very enjoyable. They're the headliners for me at the moment in a time I feel a lot of Indie pop artists have been mimicking one another (aside from Childish).

It's hard to find many people who aren't in to them right now. Nothing but good vibes. "Vessel" is what gave them their unique voice and "Blurryface" has followed it up with an additional EDM element.

3. Billy Joel/Elton John

Okay it's two in the same slot but I've got the same point for both. Incredible solo artists who've managed to sound and perform at spectacular levels after all these years. Jamming in your car to an Elton or BJ piano gig or belting "Tiny Dancer" or "Vienna" from an old four-door Lexus at midnight after a 12 hour road trip with friends have been how I've spent my time enjoying them. The piano's and voices never get old, and there's always room to enjoy classics. I'd recommend almost anything from both.

2. The Social Experiment (Chance The Rapper/Donnie Trumpet)

Both up and coming prospects, Chance and Donnie have done separate projects and worked collaboratively for a number of years. Chance's often raspy voice and goofy demeanor, or Donnie's smooth trumpet work have managed to win me over time and again. Their collaborative album "Surf" is free on I-Tunes and is absolutely wonderful.

Donnie isn't as big so to say as Chance, but his instrumentals are very notable and make good songs fantastic. Chance's albums are available for free online as well ("#10Day" has some hidden goodies with "Acid Rap" being his big hit) with his newest album showing the star power he's managed to work with due to his talents.

This includes being featured on Kanye's newest album "The Life of Pablo." I'd soundly recommend anything from "Surf" (especially with Busta Rhymes) with "Cocoa Butter Kisses" and "Acid Rain" being personal faves.

1. Kanye West

Okay, there's a large personal bias here, and I know many people will disagree with me but hear me out. Remove the PR and publicity and focus on just the music. There's something for everyone here. Whether you're looking for something electronic, a banger for a party or something to relax or wind down to, Kanye has it.

The progression of the "College Trilogy" is one of the best sequential series of albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. "The College Dropout" has the soul, uplifting beats, comedy and lyrical wit not many artists can deliver and did so in a time where gangster rap was on top. A fun and uplifting album that can only be topped by one other. Followed up by "Late Registration" and "Graduation", anything from the vocals of Adam Levine in "Heard'em Say" to the electric "Touch The Sky" featuring Lupe Fiasco or "Good Morning" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing" make for exceptional playlist staples.

Collaborations with Jay Z and R. Kelly in "Watch the Throne" and "Cruel Summer" might entice a different crowd, but none the less bring the heat. "808s and Heartbreak" and "The Life of Pablo" are different views of his life and show glimmers of other works in what make for polarizing pieces in his discography.

The end all album of this being "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" being the crowning jewel of production quality, supporting cast and general vibe make this an album that blows my socks off every time I hear it. Particular gems are "Devil in a New Dress" and "Run Away" (because we all know "All of The Lights" is flawless).
