Second TEDxMSU brings in variety of student, faculty and alumni speakers

March 3, 2016

TEDxMSU returned for the second year, tackling problems from Palestinian skateboarders to autism.

The wide array of topics discussed meshed with the event’s theme of Mobius.

TEDxMSU events director and zoology senior Paige Bott said the basic idea of a mobius is it’s a 3-D object in a 2-D world.

“With a Mobius, you can look at an infinite number of perspectives and that really fits with the multidisciplinary topics TED covers,” TEDxMSU public relations director and humanities-pre law senior Zeria Cummings said.

The Mobius theme was originally proposed as a joke, TEDxMSU events planner and comparative cultures and politics junior Ksenia Karnoup said.

“I remember we were all sitting around on couches throwing out theme ideas, somebody said Mobius not really seriously but we all liked it,” Karnoup said.

Cummings said the group wanted something "short, sweet and (kind of) a sexy word."

Karnoup said planning for the entirely student-run event began in August, with an initial applicant pool of 50 potential speakers.

“We went through and shrunk down the number of speakers to around thirty people, then we went and did round two,” Karnoup said. “It was hard because there were a lot that we really liked.”

The event took a total of 41 students to put on, with some individuals putting in 10 to 11 hours worth of effort per week, Cummings said.
