This past weekend, MSU men’s swim and dive teams attended the Big Ten Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.

Among the highlights from the weekend came a few personal and program records, including program records in the 200 relay, 400 relay, 200 free relay and an individual record broken by junior Alec Kandt in the 100 breaststroke.

Among the top performers, coach Matt Gianiodis said, was senior Ian Rodriguez, who participated in both the 200 and 400 relay and the 200-free relay.

“Rodriguez really did a great job,” Gianiodis said. “He broke three relay records last weekend and he’s grown so much in the program.”

Some other top names from the weekend include Alec Kandt and sophomores Nick Leshok and Alex Trompke. Along with Rodriguez, the quad combined to break the 200 and the 400 relay records. Kandt led the Spartans on day three of the championship, taking a seventh place finish in the 100 breaststroke, and recorded the 2nd fastest time in MSU’s history in the 200 breaststroke.

“I really did see this coming out of Alec,” said Gianiodis. “He has been swimming so fast in the relays. It hasn’t been an issue, and he has handled it well. His heat was just so deep, and the event itself is deep.”

Leshok recorded some of the fastest individual splints of his relays, and performed strongly in the 100 free, tapping the wall in 44.73. Trompke was MSU’s top performer in the 100 fly, placing 28th and gaining a season’s best of 48.64.

Junior Jon Burke took 16th in the 1,650 free at 15:27.68, earning the team 11 points just ahead of sophomore Joe Szczupakiewicz who finished at 15:28.76, taking 18th. Szczupakiewicz also did well in the 500 free, earning a season’s best of 4:28.12 and finishing in 30th. Burke followed at 4:29.18.

Overall, the Spartans ended in 10th place, gaining 230 points.

“We’ve got a really good and strong group of juniors and sophomores headed into the next season,” Gianiodis said. “I have full confidence they’ll be growing.”
