Students knit to raise money, awareness for homeless LGBTQ youths

Elementary education junior Josh Hansknecht was sitting behind a table covered with chocolate candy and a mountain of multi-colored yarn.

“Today we are hosting a knit-in, which is our little pun, kind of like a sit-in, but it’s a knit-in,” he said.

On Wednesday, four members of PRISM, South Neighborhood's LGBT caucus, collected donations and raised awareness for the Ruth Ellis Center and taught those who were interested how to knit at Wells Hall.

The Ruth Ellis Center works to provide assistance to homeless LGBTQ youths in the foster care and juvenile justice system. PRISM donates often to this cause.

“(The Ruth Ellis Center is) a very well-established organization that has always had the interest of the LGBT community at heart and that is what we’re all about here,” Hansknecht said.

The group chose to incorporate knitting because of the importance that winter clothing, hats and scarves are to those who are homeless.

Aside from enjoying time knitting with those who wanted to learn, the PRISM members were grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness about a cause that means so much to them, English secondary education sophomore Jasper Palardy said.

“It’s really just donating time and realistically, we’re not changing the world with this, we’re just knitting and collecting a few dollars," Palardy said. "But we’re not trying to change the world, we’re just trying to start a conversation, that’s the most we can do from our position."

PRISM holds weekly events at 8 p.m. Tuesdays in Room C2 Wilson Hall.
