Chinonye Nwangwu, one of the women involved in the 2015 assault of MSU student Ryah Kelly in Spartan Village, was sentenced Wednesday morning to 24 months in Michigan’s Department of Corrections and one year of probation following her release.

Nwangwu is the first of five women to be sentenced for her role in the assault and is the only defendant who has served jail time. She has currently served 282 days in jail, which will be subtracted from her 24 month sentence.

Nwangwu was also ordered to write Kelly an apology letter within three months of her incarceration and pay her share of restitution for Kelly’s medical bills and damages to her car.

The total cost of Kelly’s car damages are $7,867 and the total cost of her medical bills have yet to be determined.

Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina of the Ingham County Circuit Court said she had grappled with Nwangwu’s sentence because she understood it was a mistake but ultimately, she said, she had to decide based on the role Nwangwu played in the assault, which she said was equal to the co-defendants.

“You’re lucky no one was killed,” Judge Aquilina said. “You can’t take the law into your own hands in these situations.”

Ryah Kelly told Judge Aquilina she has forgiven the women who assaulted her and spoke about the effects the assault had on her and her daughter before Judge Aquilina made her final decision on sentencing.

“I have forgiven them, and I am moving forward," Kelly said. "But, they left me to die with my daughter sitting in my apartment, they should sit in jail.”

Brittani Barber-Gribble is the next woman who will be sentenced for her involvement in the assault. Her sentencing hearing is set for March 23 at 11 a.m.
