Saturday’s game for the MSU women’s basketball team (14-4 overall record, 5-2 Big Ten record) against the Maryland Terrapins (17-2 record, 6-1 Big Ten) has been postponed because of inclement weather, according to a press release by the MSU Athletics Department.
The Spartans were originally scheduled to take on the Terrapins at 2 p.m. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams were set to play Maryland, with the men’s team hosting the Terps at Breslin Center, with the start time slated for 6:30 p.m.
Maryland has postponed all of its athletic events for the weekend, including a wrestling meet against Wisconsin and a gymnastics meet against Penn State. All events will be rescheduled for a later date.
The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning will go into effect at 3 p.m. Friday and will stay in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday. Total snow accumulation could reach up to 30 inches, with winds ranging from 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph along the Chesapeake Bay area.
Maryland isn't the only area with severe weather. Both of the MSU men's and women's tennis teams had matches postponed in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend because of heavy rain in the Miami area. Those matches will be rescheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Spartans are currently one game back of first place Maryland, who are tied for first in the Big Ten with Ohio State University. MSU is also currently tied with Purdue for third place in the conference standings.
The last-minute postponement could be a breath of fresh air for the Spartans, who played three games in a one-week span.
The Spartans will take this time to move forward and get ready to take on Purdue at 7 p.m. next Wednesday at Breslin.
