After winning the DirecTV Wooden Legacy Tournament Sunday night, two players were honored as Big Ten Players of the Week.

Carrying the Spartans to their Wooden Legacy championship during the lengthy Thanksgiving weekend was senior guard Denzel Valentine and freshman forward Deyonta Davis, both being honored with Big Ten awards this week.

Valentine was named named Big Ten Player of the Week after his performance and leading the Spartans to four straight wins last week. Valentine averaged 22.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and seven assists in the four games last week.

The 6-foot-5 Lansing native, who was named Most Valuable Player at the Wooden Legacy, shot 51.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc. Valentine also recorded his second career triple-double last week against Boston College, the same game head coach Tom Izzo won his 500th career game.

Joining Valentine with Big Ten honors was Davis, who was named Freshman of the Week. Davis averaged 12.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks during the four games MSU played last week. Davis shot an impressive 80 percent from the floor and tallied up seven blocks. This is the first Big Ten honor for the 6-foot-10 Muskegon native in his short time here at MSU.

Davis’ Freshman of the Week honor is the first to come from MSU since Garry Harris earned the honor in February 2013.

The Spartans will get back on their home court against Louisville on Wednesday. Tipoff against the Cardinals is set for 7:15 p.m.
