The MSU wrestling team got back into action Wednesday hosting Eastern Michigan University after a two-and-a-half week hiatus.

The 4-1 Eagles decimated the now 0-4 Spartans' hopes for their first win with a final score of 34-0.

Eastern dominated all aspects of the meet, and outscored Michigan State 78-13 in combined matches.

“The bottom line is we wrestled pretty passively and not very aggressively and it came back to haunt us,” head coach Tom Minkel said. “I think our team is at a point where we we’ve gotten beaten up a few times and we’ve got to really commit to doing those things that will turn it around.”

The Spartans' struggles continued when senior Joe Johnson (3-3) lost his team's first match of the evening against EMU junior Devan Murray (6-2) and lost the decision.

MSU’s misfortunes continued through the evening when the Spartans went scoreless in their next five matches until sophomore Mitch Rogaliner (1-5) challenged EMU redshirt freshman Armando Torres (4-3), and held the advantage in the match for ten seconds. Torres eventually edged Rogaliner out by a marginal decision of 4-3.

“You’re going to be pissed about this for probably the rest of the night,” Rogaliner said. “And then starting tomorrow you’re going to take that anger and that frustration that you have and you’re going to turn it into something positive and you’re going to work at what you think you needed to.”

EMU fifth-year senior Anthony Abro (8-1) came into Wednesday’s match being ranked No. 9 in the country when he took on MSU true freshman Jacob Cooper (1-2) and won by a 12-2 decision.

Even though the night was uneventful for MSU, Minkel was able to dissect his team’s performance and find a silver lining.

“Jacob (Cooper) is a true freshman wrestling a fifth-year senior who’s their best kid and ranked in the top ten and was in on some great shots,” Minkel said. “I thought he did an outstanding job, he’s going to be a big time guy for us.”

The Spartans will take the next few days off and try again on Sunday when they take on Central Michigan. Expected start time is set for 2 p.m.
