No. 1 MSU defeated the Northeastern Huskies 78-58 Saturday afternoon to move to 12-0, matching its best start in school history.

It was a balanced offensive effort for MSU, but senior guard Denzel Valentine led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and six assists. Senior guard Bryn Forbes scored 12 points on 2-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc and sophomore guard Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. contributed 11 points.

MSU also got heavy production from their bench players to the tune of a 27-5 advantage off the bench against the Huskies.

The Huskies gave MSU all they could handle early on, as they came out with high energy attacking the glass, leading to a 14-5 rebounding advantage early on over MSU, including nine offensive rebounds. MSU outrebounded the Huskies 28-21 throughout the rest of the game.

MSU eventually used their depth to wear the Huskies down and pull away in the second half after a tightly contested first half, which saw the Huskies take a 15-10 lead before MSU took control.

After falling behind 15-10, MSU used a 7-0 run to take the lead for good, as they responded to the physical challenge of the Huskies.

A key moment to the Spartans' increased hustle as the game developed was when Forbes hit the deck for a loose ball with just over nine minutes to play in the first half. MSU had tied the game up on a Valentine jump shot and MSU head coach Tom Izzo ran on the court pumping his fist in excitement.

MSU held the Huskies leading scorer, senior guard David Walker who averages over 21 points per game, to just five points in the first half and 13 points for the game on just 5-15 shooting.

After leading 34-25 at halftime, MSU used a 16-8 run to open the second half to pull away, as the Huskies could not keep up with MSU’s tempo or depth in the second half.

Junior forward Gavin Schilling saw his first game action in over a month, as he had been out with Plantar Fasciitis, and compiled four points, three rebounds and four fouls in his return to action.

MSU can earn its best start in school history Tuesday as they travel to The Palace of Auburn Hills to take on the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies at 7 p.m.
