When MSU football takes on Alabama in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve, thousands of Spartan fans will huddled around big screens from East Lansing to Mackinac. For the many alumni, the 461,500 of them, it means a chance to gather together with their local alumni club to celebrate the new year and watch some Spartan playoff football.
Detroit & Metro Detroit
Buffalo Wild Wings
While all Buffalo Wild Wings will be chock full of fans on Dec. 31, this two-story restaurant is anticipating over 700 people to come to the game. Since it is a chain, all orders for events are handed down from corporate, no event for MSU in particular is being hosted. The restaurant expects capacity though, and encourages Spartan fans to come out.
TAP Sports Bar
TAP is one of Detroit’s newest fares. Located in MGM Grand Casino in downtown Detroit, the sports bar anticipates a big crowd for the game. A spokesperson for the bar said while no event is planned for the game, if patrons are looking to watch the game at TAP they should arrive early. TAP is only doing walk-ins and will not be taking reservations for the game. The bar will also be first come first serve. With 40+ HD TVs, TAP will be packed.
Nemo’s
Nemo’s is a Detroit staple when it comes to food and bar atmosphere in the area. It provides a shuttle to Detroit games and welcomes fans of all teams to come out. While they aren’t hosting a special event for Spartans it welcomes them to come out and enjoy the game. Expect heavy traffic because of the Red Wings game in Detroit prior to the Cotton Bowl but expect to see most of its 16 TVs tuned to the Spartans.
Saginaw
Sporty's Wing Shack and Smoke House
The Saginaw Spartans are hosting a watch party at Sporty’s Wing Shack and Smoke House in Saginaw beginning at 8 p.m. The group will be handing out small prizes to Spartan fans and encourages the public to come out. Sporty’s has been the site for the past two watch parties thrown by the group as well.
Traverse City
State Street Grille
The Grand Traverse Spartans are not hosting any specific event but encourage Spartan fans to come out and watch the game at the State Street Grille.
Packed to the brim with TVs and an enclosed and heated patio with even more TVs, Craig Rosenberg, president of the Grand Traverse Spartans, anticipates the place will be “95 percent people decked in green and white.” The bar comes with some added flair as well as Rosenberg said the manager is a Spartan fan and will pump the fight song through the speakers when the Spartan’s score.
“It’s a place where Spartan fans know if they wanna see the game it’s the place to go," Rosenberg said.
Ann Arbor
The Arena
The bar is owned by two MSU alumni and has been frequented by the MSU Alumni Club of Washtenaw County. The bar has undergone some renovations thanks to the reality TV show, Bar Rescue and comes with a host of TVs and new menu items.
