HALFTIME UPDATE:
MSU leads the Hoosiers 21-20 at halftime. Here are the top plays through two quarters:
Spartans’ intercept pass on first play of game
On the first play of the game, freshman safety Grayson Miller dove for a tipped pass by Indiana’s senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld and intercepted the ball at the Hoosiers’ 37-yard line. The Spartans were unable to put together a scoring drive following the play and Indiana took back over with 13:22 remaining in the first half.
Indiana scores first
After a disappointing first possession, the Hoosiers struck back big with a 10-play, 80-yard drive capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by junior running back Jordan Howard. Sudfeld went five-for-five passing on the drive and collected 67 yards and junior wide receiver Mitchell Paige caught three passes for 44 yards.
31-yard Cook-Burbridge connection on third and 8 leads to MSU’s first score
On third down and eight, senior quarterback Connor Cook connected with senior wide receiver Aaron Burbridge to put the Spartans at the Indiana 18-yard line. Three plays later, Cook connected with junior wide receiver R.J. Shelton for a 22-yard touchdown with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter, making the score 7-7.
MSU gets first and goal on Indiana pass interference, then capitalize
On third down and seven from the IU 10-yard line, Cook threw an incomplete slant-pass to Burbridge, but a defensive pass interference play put the Spartans at first and goal from the two-yard line. Junior running back Delton Williams ran in a one-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession and the Spartans went up 14-7.
Hoosiers’ score after Howard carries for the longest play of the half
With 10:39 remaining in the half, Howard broke free for a 33-yard run bringing the Hoosiers from their own six to their own 43-yard line. A couple of fouls on the Spartans’ defense advanced the Hoosiers even farther down field, leading to an 11-yard touchdown pass from Sudfeld to junior wide receiver Ricky Jones. The extra point kick was no good, though, and the Spartans remained ahead 14-13.
Spartans go up eight, but Hoosiers answer
The Spartans took over with 8:19 remaining and sustained a 13-play, 6:42 drive to score the half’s final points. The Spartans began at their own 25-yard line and capped off the drive on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Cook to Burbridge.
On Indiana's ensuing possession, Sudfeld threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Simmie Cobbs to cap off a four-play, 77-yard drive, bringing the halftime score to 21-20, MSU.
