True freshman running back LJ Scott has been impressive early on in his time at MSU, but in the Spartans first conference game of the season Scott took his play to another level.
He finished the game with 18 carries for 146 yards and two rushing touchdowns—all career highs.
The first 100-yard rushing performance of his young career was rewarded with Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
“LJ Scott had a big day for us against Purdue,” MSU co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Dave Warner said in a press release announcing Scott's honor. “His vision and patience with the ball in his hands are improving each week. LJ again showed his strength, as he rushed for 87 yards after contact.”
Scott has 61 carries, 376 net rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns. The freshman has the highest average yards per carry amongst other running backs with 6.2.
The Spartans have continued to split carries and go with the hot back, but as Scott continues to improve with experience he could emerge as the lead back.
