After a hard fought game on Friday evening, the MSU men’s soccer team is now 3-2-1 on the season following a draw against No. 10 ranked Maryland in the Spartan’s Big Ten conference opener.

The Spartans played much more aggressively than they did last Sunday against Creighton. MSU was able to match Maryland’s intensity and took the Terps into double-overtime, resulting in the first draw of the season for the Spartans in their Big Ten Opener.

Senior goalkeeper Zach Bennett shined again on Friday, with his fourth shutout of the season, but Bennett gives all of his credit to the defense.

“Jimmy Fiscus and Zach Carroll were the MVP’s of today” Bennett said. “And the rest of the midfield scrounged up the ball so well. I was so proud of how they did that.”

The Spartans played a much more disciplined game than Maryland, who had 18 total fouls compared to the Spartans’ ten. The Terps and the Spartans both had 16 shots for the day, and although the Spartans weren’t able to put one into the net, they were satisfied with their overall performance.

“I thought we were very good today” head coach Damon Rensing told the media after the game, “I thought we were very sharp in our movements. I thought we got into good spots and created a couple of chances. It was probably unfortunate we didn’t get a goal, Maryland probably feels the same way.”

The Spartans will finish their longest, and most difficult homestand of the season on Tuesday against No. 2 ranked Notre Dame.

“They’re a team that’s not going to make many mistakes” senior defenseman Zach Carroll said, “The key for us is we’ve got to get it wide again. We’re going to have to put up a shutout against them and hopefully we’ll put one in the goal.”
