There are currently more than 50,000 students enrolled at Michigan State University. Students from all 50 states come to East Lansing, as well as more than 130 other countries worldwide. Our campus proudly encourages a wealth of different backgrounds, creeds and walks of life. With such a diverse student population, the amount of unique and interesting stories being told on campus is immeasurable. For over 100 years, The State News has been an independent news source on MSU’s campus committed to representing the student body at large and bringing relevant and important news stories to the entire East Lansing community.
Whether an apartment complex spontaneously combusts or the streets fill with thousands of students celebrating a basketball win by throwing bagels into the air, the entire staff of State News reporters, photographers, designers and creative minds are working as hard as they can to capture the moment and represent it in a timely and appropriate manner.
Within the team, we have people who accurately represent what our student body looks like — an eclectic mix of gender identities, ethnicities, sexualities, ages, religions and lifestyles. Every student’s voice deserves to be heard, and at The State News we celebrate the melting pot that is Michigan State University.
I can speak from experience that some of the hardest working students on campus gather at 435 E. Grand River Ave. every day with the goal to provide honest, unbiased journalism that informs the student body about what they would find relevant. Working at The State News never feels like work when surrounded by an inspiring and dedicated team like the one I have the pleasure of being a part of.
But we do work, and we work hard. Don’t just take my word for it. The State News was recently awarded the Society of Professional Journalism’s Best Daily College Newspaper of 2014, and won the Pacemaker award for best online website of the 2013-14 school year. There is a well-established history of success and hard work at The State News. Reporters who worked here have gone on to write for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, ESPN and won Pulitzer Prizes.
It is our dedication to providing students with the best and most complete content we can create that has earned The State News such recognition. We have sent reporters and photographers to the presidential inauguration, Democratic and Republican national conventions, the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, and the NCAA finals. And that’s just in the past few years.
We want to provide our readers with the best content we can in any way possible.
The State News has been changing over the past few years to adapt to the rapidly expanding digital world. You will find video stories and photo galleries on our website that capture the real MSU experience. Our staff is always finding the best avenues to share breaking news, trends and issues features, sports stories and various opinion columns.
Our website is updated multiple times every day to reflect the constantly changing world at large. It is also designed with mobile readers in mind.
