Statewide student activism organization to hold series of discussions, skill sessions on campus over the weekend

May 28, 2015

The statewide, grassroots activism organization Michigan Student Power Network will be hosting a series of strategy and issues events Friday through Sunday in Berkey Hall.

The event, Michigan Student Power Convergence 2015, already has more than 70 expected attendees who have registered, state organizer Ian Matchett said, though more than twice that many have joined the event on Facebook.

Convergence was chosen to be in East Lansing by a vote from the organization, who has affiliates on campus including MSU Students United and the Black Student Alliance.

Classrooms in Berkey Hall will have a number of sessions, exploring issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or combating white supremacy and what students can do at a local level to help, as well as a number of spots designed to allow student activists to get to know each other.

Matchett said those who want to stay for a day or attend a class are welcome to, though if someone wants to stay overnight he asks them to register on the event page to ensure there's enough food and housing.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and wrap up at about 2:30 on Sunday.
