MSU's Fencing Club looks ahead to competition

April 2, 2015

The MSU's Fencing Club hopes to remain a threat in upcoming spring battles.

MSU's Fencing Club is a member of the Midwest Fencing Conference, they compete in pool of 16 schools with varsity or club programs.

Men's and women's Epee, Foil and Saber weapon squads will be sending one group of three each to the Club Fencing Championships.

One alternate each for men and women will also be attending, the alternate must be talented in all three squads in case of injury.

The squads individually focus on their weapon, each group has a different capabilities to bring to their team.

Like many club sports, fencing welcomes several athletes that are brand new to the sport.d

Most club sports struggle to bring up their numbers each season, but from year to year Club Fencing has a tremendous turn out.

The club lost several talented seniors last season and have had to teach new athletes the ropes.

"We have a fairly young team, but there is a lot of promise and a lot of potential," junior, women's saber captain Victoria Kulesza said

Women's Saber ranked No. 4 in the nation last year and have since then accumulated new members.

This year's team has been plagued by injuries and inexperience, neither of which should harm them in the championships.

"We have a very promising travel team. Even the new people who have showed up have just been improving beyond expected time," Kulesza said.

The USACFC, United States Association of Collegiate Fencing, hosts the yearly national championships.

The event is considered to be the biggest event of collegiate fencing in the world.

There will be 45 teams competing in the championships, including Michigan, Indiana and Purdue.

The team fought hard last year and had promising finishes, but improvement is key to the young squads.

Fencing has become a talked about sport in recent years particularly on college campuses adding to interest in the club.

"(Fencing) has become way popular, I think especially after the past Summer Olympics," Kulesza said.

MSU's Club Fencing will be one to watch in the upcoming championships.

The Club Fencing Championships will be held on April 11 and 12 in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.
