MSU Synchronized Skating Team sees improvements from previous year

March 23, 2015

It's been an exciting year for the MSU Synchronized Skating Team, despite being a bumpy one.

Their competition season began in early December with the 19th Annual Dr. Porter Synchronized Classic in Ann Arbor.

From the event, the Spartans brought home the bronze with a score of 68.72.

The team won the silver medal in the 2015 Midwest & Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships in Minnesota in early February of this year. They scored an 81.56 from the judges.

"We like to have fun, and our coach knows that. She’s good about it. We also know when to get our work done," skater and anthropology sophomore Katelyn Dallavalle said

Last year, the team was unable to score above 80 points until the national competition, which is an indicator to their improvement this year.

Though they worked hard over the course of the weekend, the team was careful to mix business with pleasure, and made a side-trip to the Mall of America for an opportunity to unwind.

But later in February, the team lost some of their steam.

They placed 6th in the 2015 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships in Providence, Rhode Island with a score of 79.07.

Dallavalle said that the team's performance at nationals "didn't go as well as planned."

"I think nationals was a good learning experience for us, because we saw that there are a lot of teams in the same area of points," she said. "We were not expecting to get 6th — we were expecting to get 2nd, 3rd or 4th. "

With the number of seniors leaving the team this spring, the future success of the team will depend on how well incoming freshman bond with current team members.

"In the college level, you’re getting new girls in constantly," she said. "Learning to skate with each other can be hard."
