Following weekend tournament, MSU softball fourth in the Big Ten

Softball went 3-2 in the Florida Atlantic Tournament over the weekend, bumping their overall to 7-3. MSU is fourth in the Big Ten standings.

MSU defeated Tulsa 4-3 in the opening game of the Florida Atlantic Tournament. Freshman McKenzie Long hit her first career home run in the second, and had the game-winning RBI. Tulsa responded with a three-run bottom of the inning. MSU countered with a three-spot of their own in the top of the third to take the 4-3 lead.

After redshirt sophomore Dani Goranson threw three innings, and kept Tulsa off the scoreboard, redshirt freshman Kristina Zalewski entered the game, quickly knocking out the rest of Tulsa’s lineup. Zalewski faced seven batters in the sixth and seventh innings combined.

MSU lost to Florida Atlantic 9-1, after seven errors. Starter Zalewski went six innings, striking out a career-best nine, in their second game of the day against Florida Atlantic. A five-run seventh inning clinched the win for Florida Atlantic, only four of their nine runs were earned.

MSU rallied the next day and achieved a 7-3 victory against Providence. Junior Shanin Thomas hit a career-best three doubles. Senior Alyssa McBride had a pair of hits and two RBI. Starter Goranson earned her first runs of the season. Zalewski relieved Goranson in the second to throw six innings of four-hit ball, striking out seven and earn her third win of the season.

Later that day, MSU fell after a three-run inning lead to a 9-3 victory for Florida Atlantic. FAU scored twice in each of the first two innings, and followed with another in the bottom of the third. MSU put up a bit of a fight in the top of the fourth, and pulled the score up to 5-1. Another small victory in the sixth brought the score to 8-2. Even the third home run of the season, by sophomore Sarah Gutknecht, in the top of the final inning couldn’t save the Spartans.

Zalewski pitched a complete-game shutout against Drexel, including working out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, earning Michigan State a 1-0 victory. The closing game turned into a pitcher’s duel after MSU’s early lead. Zalewski didn't allow a runner past second until Drexel threatened in the sixth, when they loaded the bases on two singles and an error, with no outs.

MSU heads to Riverside, California for four games next weekend for the UC-Riverside Tournament.
