MSU's men’s swimming and diving team feels confident about their upcoming performance at the Big Ten Championships in Iowa this week.
“Overall I think we are going to start a trend of showing the Big Ten that… Michigan State has a lot of skill," junior Ian Rodriguez said. "We’re going to surprise a lot of people; I guarantee that.”
Senior Kyle Workman said the team will lean on their seniors to perform well during the meet.
“Myself and my fellow senior… David Zoltowski, are looking to lead the team to the best finish we’ve had in our four years,” Workman said. “We’re excited, we both feel like we’re gonna have the best meet of…our careers and… we think the team will follow suit.”
Head coach Matt Gianiodis said he thinks the effort his team has put into the season has a good chance of paying off in the championship meet.
“They’ve worked really hard this year and…they’ve definitely put themselves in a position to have a good championship,” he said.
Gianiodis said the teams strong points are breast stroke, freestyle, and relays, and the team is working on their sprints.
Workman said that he feels Friday will be the best day for the team, which includes the 400 individual medley, an event that Gianiodis said the team is good at.
“We have a lot of young kids in the 4 IM. They’re gonna drop a lot of time,” Workman said.
Rodriguez agrees that the freshmen this year are fast, and thinks that they’re going to surprise the team at the championships. He said the freshman have helped to motivate the team throughout the season.
“Despite how young we are…we have had a great year,” Gianiodis said. “The guys have put themselves in a position to really earn good times and good swims…based on the work that they’ve done.”
Gianiodis said that he believes the competition will be good, and it’s going to be difficult, but he still feels great about the team.
“We’ve had great leadership, and it hasn’t been just necessarily great leadership from one or two people at the top, it’s been great leadership and it’s really permeated through the entire team,” Gianiodis said.
The championship meet begins Wednesday in Iowa City, Iowa and concludes Saturday.
