Gymnastics bounces back to defeat Pittsburgh

February 15, 2015

The gymnastics team was able to bounce back with a nail biting victory on Sunday afternoon at Jenison Field House.

MSU defeated Pittsburgh, 195.150 to 194.275 to snap a two game losing streak.

Sunday’s match was the team’s Autism Awareness Meet.

“I think we bought a little more energy,” head coach Kathie Klages said. “We had three rocking events, just awesome.”

The Spartans outscored the Panthers in the vault, bars and floor events.

MSU raced out to a quick start in the first rotation. The Spartans took a 1-0 match lead after a 48.950 performance on vault to Pittsburgh’s 48.650 score on the bars.

Sophomore Mackenzie Smith led MSU on vault with a 9.850 score.

In the second rotation, the Spartans posted a 49.075 score on bars, which gave MSU a 98.025-97.075 at the midway point.

After three events, MSU trailed Pittsburgh 145.875 to 145.900. However, the Spartans were able to overtake the Panthers in the floor event after posting a score of 49.275.

“There was a lot more concentration and a lot more focus,” junior Lisa Burt said. “We ended on a strong note with floors.”

Burt led MSU with an All Around score of 39.125.

The Spartans will return to action on Friday when they face off against Big Ten foe Illinois in Champaign.
