Baseball goes 1-2 in weekend series

February 23, 2015

An offensive explosion helped the baseball team salvage a weekend tournament in Texas.

MSU (3-3 overall) defeated Southeastern Louisiana (5-3 overall), 9-2 Sunday afternoon as part of the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational.

The nine runs were the most MSU had scored since opening day against New Mexico (5-2 overall). The Spartans had combined for just eight runs over their previous four games.

MSU lost the first two games of the three-day invitational against Houston Baptist and UT Arlington, both by a 3-1 score.

After combining for nine hits Friday and Saturday, MSU totaled 10 hits against Southeastern Louisiana.

Freshman infielder Zack McGuire and redshirt freshman catcher Chad Roskelly led the offensive barrage with four RBIs, three runs and six hits combined. McGuire got things going early, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at one, his first home run and RBI as a collegiate athlete.

The bats only heated up from there for the Spartans, who scored three runs in the next three innings.

Senior first baseman Blaise Salter came off the bench and hit a two run shot to extend MSU’s lead to five runs in the sixth inning. The Spartans scored three more runs in the eighth after two hits and two walks.

MSU has saved their best offense for the latter innings. Half of MSU’s 26 runs this season have come in the seventh inning or later.

In a game ruled by offense, junior pitcher Anthony Misiewicz put together an impressive performance en route to his first win of the season.

Misiewicz allowed only one run on two hits and two walks in five innings. Misiewicz also had seven strikeouts.

The Spartans will travel to Los Angeles this weekend to take on UCLA (6-1 overall) in a three-game series beginning Friday.

UCLA took two of three games against UNC (4-2 overall) this past weekend and has scored at least nine runs in four games this season.
