MSU earns a point following shootout win against Penn State

MSU hockey (8-10-1, 2-2-1-1 Big Ten) opened its two-game series against Penn State (10-8-2, 4-3 Big Ten) with a 2-2 tie on Friday night, and earned the extra point with a 1-0 shootout victory. Junior goaltender Jake Hildebrand, a Pennsylvania native, was busy all night for the Spartans, turning away 50-of-52 PSU shots and denying all three Nittany Lions in the shootout.

Junior forward Ryan Keller and sophomore forward Villiam Haag scored the goals for the Spartans, with Villiam Haag getting credit for the game-winner.

Penn State controlled the possession early in the game, but Hildebrand stood tall stopping 20 shots in the opening period.

MSU scored the games first goal at 16:11 of the first period, as Keller potted a pass from senior forward Brent Darnell. Darnell, who now lays claim to a five-game point streak, made a nifty pass in front of the net that found its way to Keller who scored his second goal of the season.

The lead didn't hold for long, however, as the Nittany Lions would tie it up just minutes later. Just as the game clock neared one minute, PSU's Eric Scheid got sprung on a breakaway off a great pass from Scott Conway. It initially looked like Hildebrand made the stop, but the puck trickled over the goal line with just 59 seconds remaining.

Once again, the score wouldn't stay that way for long. The Spartans would answer just 26 seconds later, as Haag unleashed a toe-drag on a PSU defender and fired a wrist shot into the roof of the net to give MSU a 2-1 lead.

The Nittany Lions would finally tie this game up in the third period after controlling the shots-on-goal throughout the game. After Hildebrand made an initial save off of a Taylor Holmstrom shot, David Goodwin grabbed the rebound and threw it in the net as Hildebrand scrambled to regain his position.

The game would remain 2-2 through the rest of regulation and overtime, earning each team a tie and a point in the standings. MSU and PSU would head to the shootout to determine who got the extra point in Big Ten standings.

Darnell scored the lone goal in the shootout, and Hildebrand capped off his homecoming in dramatic fashion. MSU and PSU will meet again on Saturday night with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m.
