Women's cross country takes first place at Great Lakes Regional Championships

November 17, 2014

This weekend in Madison, Wisconsin, the women’s cross country team took first place and the men placed second at the Great Lakes Regional Championship.

Only two weeks after redshirt senior Leah O’ Connor won the Big Ten championship after running closely to Wisconsin’s sophomore Sarah Disanza, she took another victory. This time, redshirt sophomore Rachele Schulist followed in second place, with Disanza in third.

This marks the sixth women’s regional win in program history for the Spartans — with the last coming in 2010. The women finished with 28 points and Wisconsin in second with 82. Following Wisconsin was Toledo with 133 points.

Last weekend at the Big Ten championship, the men’s team placed fifth behind Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State and Indiana. Redshirt junior Caleb Rhynard finished fourth, followed by senior Ben Miller in 11th. Second place is the best team finish for the program — which occurred in 2009.

The men finished with 82 points, Wisconsin in first with 61. Michigan followed behind the Spartans with 94 points.
