No. 16 MSU welcomed the visiting Miami (OH) Red Hawks for a Sunday afternoon game, but the Spartans faced little opposition, cruising to a 85-39 victory.
Miami (1-3 overall) sat in a 2-3 zone to start, and the Spartans (4-1 overall) made the Red Hawks pay with a couple early 3-pointers from senior guard Anna Morrissey and sophomore guard Tori Jankoska.
Morrissey, a former walk-on, scored a career-high 11 points last game against Oakland, but she improved that number to 17 against Miami. Head coach Suzy Merchant said that it has "been enjoyable to watch" Morrissey's breakout season.
"First and foremost, it starts with her ability to run the team," Merchant said. "It lets Tori and Aerial kind of do their thing and that’s where it starts. Anything out of that has been a bonus. To me, she’s always been a really really good shooter. (Morrissey) has never really looked for her shot because she’s never had to and she’s never played a lot of minutes.”
MSU had a stretch of sloppy turnovers midway through the first half, but sophomore forward Aerial Powers eventually ended it with a jumper. The Spartans were careless with the ball at times, totaling 13 first half turnovers. Despite scoring 41 points in the first half, MSU did not take a single shot from the free throw line.
Merchant addressed these issues at the break and MSU turned the ball over just once in the second half and shot 19 free throws.
“Most of our turnovers came in transition so we were trying
to be a little too fancy, trying to make great plays versus going through your
progressions and seeing what’s available," Merchant said. "You really have to credit the kids for
that. You can say stop turning it over and get to the free throw line and you
can make a few adjustments, but for the most part, they really have to be the
ones to make better decisions.”
With a large lead for most of the game, a few Spartan reserves saw extended playing time. Freshman forward Kennedy Johnson and freshman guard Lexi Gussert played 17 and 19 minutes, respectively.
Despite reserves coming in and out of the lineup, MSU kept the throttle down, and more than doubled up Miami's score.
"We made a goal at halftime to hold them under 40
points as a team..we did that," senior forward Becca Mills said. "We kind of just focused on us and set goals for
us to focus on. I think that it made us better today, instead of just finishing the game and playing it out.”
The Spartan offense was clicking on all cylinders, as MSU shot 53 percent from the field and nine different Spartans scored. Five Spartans also scored in double digits, as Powers finished with her fifth straight double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
MSU’s next game will be at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Breslin Center, as the Spartans host Georgia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
