November 17, 2014

Notre Dame (No. 25) defeated the men’s swimming and diving team this weekend at IM Sports-West, 171-127, winning seven of 16 events.

“I don’t think we could have done anything that much better,” head coach Matt Gianiodis said. “They are a well coached, good team. Just have a really solid, deep team — probably more depth on the men’s side than the women’s.”

Freshman Joe Szczupakiewicz took the first victory for the Spartans in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing at 9:32.29. Following was sophomore Jon Burke in second (9:33.92). Burke finished first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.51).

Pulling in two wins was freshman Lachie McLeish. He took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.05) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.21).

Freshman Nick Leshok followed behind McLeish and Notre Dame’s Michael Hudspith, taking third (1:43.04).

Freshman Alex Trompke finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (49.88) and 100-yard butterfly (49.51).

In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Alec Kandt won, with a finishing time of 2:05.67. Szczupakiewicz trailed, finishing third at 4:40.22.

The Fighting Irish took the top five places in both the three-meter diving and the one-meter diving.

The Spartans now have a 4-2 record.

At the start of this season, the women’s team fell to Notre Dame in their first dual meet, 118-182.

Both teams return to competition Friday, when they travel to Evanston, Illinois, for the three-day Northwestern Invitational.
