The women’s tennis team took on Cornell, West Virginia and Akron this past weekend in Ohio, where they claimed 16 victories during the three-day meet.
“If you talk about the people competing in the top six, you have one senior, one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen that are healthy and playing,” head coach Simone Jardim said. “I think it’s very good for our program to have kids coming in and contributing right away. It looks good for the future because we are very young.”
Spartans ended day one with six wins. Senior Catherine Parenteau (6-4, 6-3), freshman Aslina Chua (2-6, 6-4, 1-0), freshman Lexi Baylis (6-1, 6-3) and junior Emily Meyers (6-1, 6-1) defeated their single opponents from West Virginia in singles, while pairs Parenteau/sophomore Athena Trouillot (8-3) and Meyers/freshman Lexi Baylis (8-0) beat Akron in doubles.
MSU beat Akron in all six single matches: sophomore Erin Faulkner (7-5, 7-5), Trouillot (6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-5), Chua (6-2, 6-0), Baylis (6-0, 6-0), Meyers (4-6, 6-2, 10-7), and freshman Colleen O’Brien (6-4, 6-1). Senior Hilary Hager and O’Brien defeated Sophia Geier and Maria Bessmertnaya of Arkon 8-4.
The final day of the Akron Invitation brought three Spartan wins: Baylis (6-1, 6-4) in singles against Cornell, and Baylis/Meyers (8-3) and Chua/Hager (8-6) wins in doubles vs. West Virginia.
“On Sunday, (associate head coach Tyler Faulkner) talked to them about being aggressive and making some adjustments in doubles and they did really well with that,” Jardim said.
During the team’s bye week, the women’s tennis team prepares for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, starting next Friday in Champaign, Ill.
“We have time to make some adjustments get ready,” Jardim said. “It’s good to be home and get some rest and get ready for such a rough tournament.”
