A usually stout MSU defense was taken by surprise early when OSU freshman forward Marcus McCrary at the 14:27 mark. For only the second time in the season the Spartans found themselves trailing a game.

The remainder of the first half saw neither team generate much offense it wasn't until later in the second half that MSU saw an equalizer tying the game 1-1 at the 62:21 mark off of of a header from senior forward Ryan Keener assisted by sophomore midfielder Dewey Lewis.

The game wasn't tied for long, as OSU senior midfielder Yianni Sarris scored off an MSU turnover at the 71:30 mark.

Minutes later, the Buckeyes added a third goal from OSU's junior defender Liam Doyle at the 73:06 mark taking a 3-1 lead against MSU. 

The Spartans didn't give up, adding a goal minutes after the Buckeye's third. MSU's senior forward Tim Kreutz scored his first goal of the season at the 75:35 mark with a header off of an assist by senior midfielder Fatai Alashe.

The Spartans couldn't produce another equalizer though, ultimately falling short to conference foe Ohio State in the team's first conference loss of the season. 

The second half saw both teams score two goals a piece but the MSU couldn't overcome the three goal output from the Buckeyes. MSU was outshot 13-10 in the game but shot even in the second half with seven shots for both MSU and OSU. MSU couldn't capitalize on their corner kicks despite holding a 7-3 advantage over the Buckeyes in the game. 

MSU has positives to build on moving forward, despite losing the team was able to score multiple goals for only the second time this season. 

The Spartans will next play again on Oct. 7 against the Akron Zips (5-3-1 overall) at home in DeMartin Stadium at 4 p.m. before playing conference foe Wisconsin (1-7-1 overall, 0-3-0 Big Ten) on Oct. 11.
