Women's soccer climbs national rankings

September 9, 2014

After six wins to start the 2014 campaign, MSU (6-0 overall) has climbed the national rankings to No. 15 on Soccer America Women’s Top 25 Poll.

For the third straight year, MSU has breezed through the non-conference schedule, and in doing so, has defeated some very talented teams.

“I try to stay in the moment, like I ask my team to do, but I would have never projected this against a collection of strong opponents,” head coach Tom Saxton said of his team’s hot start.

Fellow Big Ten foes No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 11 Penn State and No. 21 Illinois join the Spartans in the newest poll.

“There’s always things you can improve on, many things. But we have a great start here, and hopefully, we can keep the momentum going,” redshirt junior defender Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz said after defeating Western Michigan on Sunday.

Although MSU has struggled the past two years against a very challenging Big Ten conference, the Spartans appear poised to pick up some big wins this year. The undefeated start has given the squad hope and confidence heading into the conference slate.

“It’s an amazing feeling. Last year we went undefeated with a tie into the Big Ten season and didn’t do so well. I’m hoping we can grind it out this year and get some wins,” junior forward Allyson Krause said.

MSU will take on No. 8 Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at DeMartin Stadium in a game that should determine the legitimacy of both teams.
