MSU alumna and former State News reporter Jemele Hill, co-host of ESPN2’s “Numbers Never Lie,” recorded live from the MSU Union with co-host Michael Smith earlier today. The show aired from noon to 1 p.m.
Hill, who graduated from MSU’s journalism program in 1997, was selected to be the Grand Marshall of the homecoming parade, taking place on Friday at 6 p.m.
“Numbers Never Lie” had many current and former Spartans as special guests, including basketball head coach Tom Izzo, football head coach Mark Dantonio, along with former Spartan and current Arizona Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton, former MSU basketball player Mateen Cleaves and former MSU football players and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress. The show started off featuring some film of MSU students slapping hands with Hill and responding to Smith’s “Spartans, what is your profession?” chant.
Hill began reminiscing on her college experiences and how the campus, including the MSU Union, has changed since she attended.
“I was born in Detroit, raised by Michigan State,” Hill said during “Numbers Never Lie.”
About 100 students and East Lansing locals sat on stage during the show and in the viewer audience, while others were featured in videos shown after commercial breaks.
“I was just really excited to see all of the special guests and, hopefully, get on TV,” natural science freshman Hanna Dardas said. “It shows the impact of the university and how you always have a close tie with your school. As a freshman looking up to that, it’s really cool that she still comes back and considers this her home.”
After the homecoming committee selected Hill as Grand Marshall, Hill wanted to make sure her time on campus was special, not just for herself, but for all MSU students and faculty.
“It was Jemele’s idea to bring her show here, which is awesome. So we tried to find anyway we could make it work and it’s awesome that we did,” MSU Communications Manager Jennifer Orland said. “It was Jemele that wanted to show off MSU and I’m glad that she wanted to do that.”
Hill noted her excitement to be on campus and participate in this years homecoming festivities, along with her green and white pride, throughout the show.
