Game-winner by Jamie Cheslick propels women's soccer over Oakland, 1-0

September 2, 2014

MSU won in thrilling fashion Tuesday night, as freshman forward Jamie Cheslik scored the game-winner in the 89th minute to defeat Oakland, 1-0.

Cheslik nailed the game’s lone goal on a breakaway shot from five yards out. Senior midfielder Megan Marsack assisted Cheslik on the score, and the Spartans (4-0 overall) pulled away with the victory to remain undefeated. Both teams had three corner kicks and fired 10 shots, with Cheslik’s final one proving to be the difference.

MSU needed every minute in the contest, as goalkeepers for both teams were solid in net. MSU’s redshirt senior Courtney Clem tallied four saves in the win.

Clem, who has been a consistent presence for the Spartans, picked up her third shutout of the young season. Heading into the game, Clem ranked in the top three in the Big Ten for her goals against average, save percentage, saves, and shutouts.

The Spartans defense has been stingy, giving up only .25 goals per game this season.

Cheslik, a breakout freshman, scored her team-leading third goal this year. She also leads the squad in points, with seven.

After playing and tying Oakland in consecutive double-overtime affairs the past two seasons, MSU defeated the Golden Grizzlies for the first time since 2011. MSU now holds a 8-2-2 record against Oakland.

MSU will return home for its next game against IPFW at 5 p.m. on Friday at DeMartin Stadium
